ECONEC deploys a peer support and learning mission in Senegal.
In line with its mandate to promote free, transparent and credible elections in West Africa, the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), has deployed a peer support and learning mission to Senegal ahead of the 24 March 2024 presidential election.
The mission, comprising the Chairpersons of the electoral commissions of Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone, will be in Dakar from 21 - 28 March 2024. The aim of the mission is to demonstrate the solidarity of the sub-region's electoral management bodies (EMBs) with Senegal's Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA), and to lend moral support to its Chairman at this crucial time.
During their stay, the members of the mission will hold working sessions with various stakeholders in the electoral process, including the electoral commission, the administration, civil society organizations, the media, the security forces, as well as the ECOWAS long-term electoral observation mission and other international observation missions, in order to ascertain the smooth conduct of the various aspects of the process.
The 24 March 2024 election will enable the 7,033,854 registered voters in the country and 338,040 diaspora voters to elect the fifth President of the Republic of Senegal.
The ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC is the umbrella organization for electoral management bodies (EMBs) in West Africa. Founded in February 2008 to promote free, fair and credible elections, the Network has drawn on the 1991 ECOWAS Declaration of Political Principles on Freedom, Peoples' Rights and Democratization to strengthen electoral processes in West Africa.
