In keeping with its mandate to promote free, fair and credible elections in West Africa, the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) deployed post-electoral follow-up mission to Ghana from 10 to 14 July 2023.
The mission which was led by the Chairmen of the electoral management bodies of Nigeria and Niger, was supported by the ECONEC Permanent Secretary and a technical team from the Permanent Secretariat. The main objective of this mission was to assess the level of implementation of the recommendations made by the ECOWAS and AU Electoral Observation Missions (EOMs) that observed the December 2020 General elections in Ghana.
Moreover, the mission explored possible areas of technical support to ensure full implementation of all the recommendations and ultimately identified the required needs of the Electoral Commission of Ghana ahead of its 2024 elections.
The delegation held working sessions with various stakeholders of the Ghanaian electoral process, including the Electoral Commission, the Police Service, the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), civil society organisations (CSOs), the Ghana Journalists' Union and international partners involved in the electoral process.
This mission was deployed with financial support from the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations (EPSAO) Project, co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and implemented by GIZ.
